About the Isshin-Ryu Kazoku
The Isshin-Ryu Kazoku ("Family") was created to bring the teachings from Grandmaster Toby Cooling to its students through a familyorianted style dojo or school.
Goals of the Order of Isshin-Ryu Martial Arts
- To provide one of the best self-defense and traditional training programs available
- Provide and maintain standards for the attainment of black belt status;
- Foster a sense of family and community among members;
- Organize trainings, competitions, and special classes to provide opportunities for members to learn and grow within the martial arts;
- Keep the costs of participation as low as possible for members;
- Provide scholarship programs for eligible students.
Roots in Isshinryu Karate
The Isshin-Ryu Kazoku has its roots in Isshinryu Karate (one heart way). Isshin-Ryu was developed by the late Master Tatsuo Shimabuku in the early 1950s on the island of Okinawa which is now part of Japan. It is a hybrid of the two types of karate learned by Master Shimabuku. It combines Shorin Ryu and Goju Ryu, along with some classical Okinawan weaponry through Kobudo.
It has grown tremendously throughout the United States since he began training the US Marines stationed there in the 1950s and 1960s. Our training is directed specifically for self-defense and personal growth, not for sport or recreation.

To the wonderful base of Isshin-Ryu Karate, we offer a diversified curriculum of martial arts training which includes: Kobudo (traditional Okinawan weapons), Chin-na (control techniques), Arnis (stick and knife), and Traditional JiuJitsu, Joint Locks through Pain/Leverage Compliance techniques.

At the Ocean Pines Martial Arts Academy, our martial arts training represents the teachings and principles as orginally learned by Grandmaster Toby Cooling. We are interested in quality in our students training, not the amount of students we have in our classes. A person’s character and integrity is one of the most important parts of being accepted as a member of the Isshin-Ryu Kazoku.
If you are starting out as a new student at the Ocean Pines Martial Arts Academy, you are required to become a member after 60 days.

Learn modern close-quarter combat strategies including Kata, Chin-na (control techniques), Kyusho, Traditional Jiu-Jitsu, Introduction to Modern Arnis, Pain/Leverage Compliance techniques.
